THERMAL — A 55-year-old Alta Loma woman participating in the Tour de Palm Springs was killed Saturday when her bicycle was struck by a vehicle along 60th Avenue in Thermal.
The California Highway Patrol said the woman, who was identified as Lavonne Koester rode into the path of a Dodge truck near the intersection of 60th and Harrison Street and was thrown from her bike. She suffered major injuries.
No arrest was made, according to CHP Officer Mike Radford. He added that the incident, which was reported at 12:12 p.m., was not a hit-and-run.
Neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the collision, he said.
Koester was rushed to JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio, where she was later pronounced dead at 1 p.m., according to the coroner’s office.
She was participating in the 100-mile ride and was, according to the ride route, at mile 67 at the time of the collision.
The ride takes place on public roadways, which are not closed to vehicular traffic during the event, the CHP said, adding that participants are required to obey all rules and regulations of the road.
